    Hello !
Im planing on getting an arcade stick for VF4 and more generally for PS2.
But first here are my ideas :

    1) I have an official Dreamcast Stick (which i love). I was going to hack and old Playstation controller and make the connections to it, thus making me a Stick than im confortable with and connectable to both PS and DC . Sounds complicate but it aint (the arcade stick is full of space in it )

    2) Buy separate arcade pieces (click here ) and hack a Playstation controller etc ...
This guarantees a stick made for me :p

    3) Just buy somekind of other arcade stick (i live in France), so Hori Sticks are hardly available for me and if I find them they'll cost a fortune)

There is another problem: Does VF4 treat game pads and Arcade sticks he same way, i mean does it tolerate wrong inputs more than for another controller type, or does'nt the game make any difference ?

Thx in advance for your advice,
    Matthias (16 y/o)

PS: Hope my english is not too bad, and dont point out links that only deliver in the states. I guess this place is better for my post :p

Compared to previous VF games, VF4's input buffer system is quite friendly. It makes the game quite playable on a pad, but I still prefer sticks by a longshot.

I don't think the PS2 treats arcade sticks any different from the D-Pad and buttons on say, a PSX Generation controller (as opposed to Dual Shock 2).

However... I think Dual Shock 2 lets out a signature of some sort to the console and hence I can't use my old Hori stick on a game like Frequency. But if you were to convert your Dreamcast stick using an old Playstation pad or Dual Shock 1 even, I assume it would work.

I don't think anybody has mentioned this stick before, but I use a very old deluxe ASCII Ware arcade stick that Sony Europe distributed soon after the launch of PSX. It's a huge grey behemoth with numerous autofire options at the top of the stick.

Anyway, it's a really sturdy stick with excellent directional responce. The buttons are a little on the chunky side but overall ths stick is great for Virtua Fighter 4. The layout is two rows of four buttons:

    L1, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, R1
    L2, CROSS, CIRCLE, R2

....which is great because you can configure the buttons to get VF4 arcade spacing by putting [G] on L2, [P] on SQUARE and [K] on TRIANGLE.

I think allot of people here may be prematurely judging some of these sticks. It takes some time to really get used to a particular stick. The stick I use took me a day or so of solid play to adjust to.

    I bought this

Bored of twisting my left hand like mad to pull off a SPoD, I bought this baby.

Only 20$Can, so I assume 12$ US, this stick really kicks ass. Heavy enough, sensible buttons, easy to find diags, it really rocks. So if you only have a little money and wanna buy a stick, try this one. Took me 3 hours to get used to it.

I did just that. I hacked my DC stick and converted it for PS2 use. The design credit really goes to Kbcat - and it's a beautiful stick.

The parts in the new stick are a Happ Controls competition joystick with a Perfect360 optical housing. All the buttons were also replaced with Happ competition buttons. In order to accomodate the stick, the DC stick bottom had to be raised 1 inch. On the inside, a normal third party PSX controller was used for connections. Check out the pics if ya like.

    Hey Chanchai,

You guys still underestimate the power of a MAS!!?? What more can you ask for in a joystick. It's not "like" an arcade stick; it IS an arcade stick. I hung with you guys for a bit during NYG (2 I think it was??); based on the subject matter, I'll let you guess who I am yourself /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

24 bucks is the quote today. Has anyone else enjoyed this arcae stick? The price is awesome. Stick looks fine too. My Penquin has trouble with 270 and HCB throws it is a bit stiff in execution of CD as well. thx

Hey, how's it going? Don't worry, I'm not ripping on the MAS anymore. If people like US Syle sticks, more power to them for picking a MAS. Even more power to those who have successfully made a nice custom stick!

My prejudice for the US arcade sticks aren't as bad as they used to be... I mean, I could always use them, we all grew up on them. I just still prefer the Japanese style.

But hey, I'm happy I can still pull off Ivy's Summon Suffering a good amount in SC2, not like that's the most complicated thing to do in that game, but at least it's a test of direction input (though it has loose requirements).

Llanfair: thats a thing of BEAUTY! nice work. i would love to convert one of my agetech sticks into a real arcade stick.
Q: is this something that would be easy enough for someone who has never done it before?

do you have any tips, or kbcat's plans to post?:)

i found this page through a link above:
    home made arcade sticks

ill have to research this more, that stick looks great!

First, I think it has been mentioned before, but I'll say it again after a bad experience. Do not deal with www.buyrite.net , also known as www.buyritegames.com They are one of the scums of internet commerce.

Anyway, I did get a joystick for $10.99 and free shipping from www.buy.com The below:

    http://www.buy.com/retail/games/product.asp?sku=50010145&loc=15298

Hey, it's not a MAS or anything, but for $11 and free shipping, it's pretty damn good, imho. It's a pretty much ps2 dualshock with a joystick, so it vibrates and whatnot. It's helping out my CVS2 game more than VF4, but hey, it's only $11.

those are the sticks made by naki inc. (makers of the spider man dual shock controllers) i have to say the'yr poorly made, i barely used mine and it broke down in less than 2 months (used it like 2- 4 times a week, and been very careful with it too /versus/images/icons/frown.gif ), i guess thats what you get for a cheap price, and since its the mini stick so its really small, and has a fairly good control IMO, but like i said not that durable. and yes its seems better for CVS2 tahn it is for VF4. hehe

2 months, eh? Oh well, good thing it's only 11 bucks. but yeah, the control is pretty good.

Call me crazy, but I just ordered the official Hori VF4 stick online. The shipping from US to Europe is a murder.. around $50.. well, whatcha gonna do if none of the local shops sell this stuff..

    Are Fighting Sticks 100% reliable?
Are there times when it doesnt work midgame, or it doesnt respond for a couple of frames?

Coz i heard with the GT3 Wheel that it happens, like there was somthing wrong with the USB connection...

Just making sure nothing liek that happens coz i'm planning to buy one...

there's no definite answer for you question, coz there's a bunch of good ones that are totally reliable and a few that just totally sucks, but really is all in your prefference, which ever stick you find accomodating to you and your playing technique will be good, check the whole thread to get an idea of what most people prefer, there's a bunch of info about sticks in this thread, there's even one that links you to a "make your own joystick" website.

oh and no offense, its most likely that you'll find something 100% realiable after all in this world nothing is perfect.

I've experienced the problems you speak of on a friends GT3 wheel (can't shift while turning, braking force is only 75%, wheel stops responding, etc). For VF4 I own two ASCII FT2 sticks. My wife and I play regularly, we haven't run into trouble like that. I do have one button that got a little sticky, but that cleared itself up. I have over 2000 fights on that stick.

I ordered a Hori Tekken 4 stick from Toys&Joys. Great and speedy service. Transport costs were about 38 dollars.
I had a surprise when the phone rang with a guy from customs asking me what was in the package. Ended up paying 30 euro's import tax.
But I like the stick a lot. I hate it to have to take a second rate product because of the lack of wise people who know what people want to buy for their games.

Well enjoy it, I'm impressed with my T4 stick apart from one or two minor details. I've got a Namco stick on the way so I'll wait and see how that compares.
