To commemorate the 20 years of Virtua Fighter, Sega has started a new website - http://vf20th.sega.jp/ From the first blog post of the site (rough translation) - "20 years have passed since the release of Virtua Fighter. Thank you very much to our fans." This special site will be sequentially updated to celebrate this milestone, looking back at every step of the path to present day. From AM2's website and Famitsu's article, the anniversary site will subsequently give a glimpse to the development of the games in the series along with tournament history, something for both new and old fans. The 20th anniversary site starts off with the opening movie from the original Virtua Fighter.

Seems more like a celebration to the end of the series rather than extending the series. Don't really think that the series has the potential to yield the profits that it used to. The reality is that this game is no longer that popular in Japan, and elsewhere it is only played by a small community of people. Really doubt they would come out with a VF 6. For all the other VF reiterations, they were news of development years before it came out. Sega doesn't seem to take any chances anymore, and I doubt they would for this franchise as well.

that doesn't bother me actually. Even for vf4 they made FINAL tuned. It's just a way to say it's the last game for that number. Altought i won't mind a further patch of the 5th game, just to spice things up.

I agree. I really can't see them quitting this franchise, at least not yet.

I agree with this immensely. It's hard to be innovative with this series anymore. I have wondered for years what Yu Suzuki could bring to the table with VF6. The changes from VF1, to VF2, to VF3 were huge, but also because graphics advancements and capabilities became huge. VF4 was of course an advancement over VF3, but I've always felt that it wasn't different enough, and in my opinion, VF5 and all its iterations have been built off of VF4 in many ways - just not different enough. Don't get me wrong, I love VF5 (vanilla mostly), but I've always ranked them as such:

      VF3
      VF2
      VF5
      VF4
      VF1

Getting off topic here. Just wanted to mention that I look to Yu Suzuki for adding inspiration back into the series.

VF3 laid the groundwork for VF becoming "VF" so to speak. I really hope for an announcement of an official port to make up for the DC version, if not a collection, also it was the last VF Yu Suzuki worked on so that's gotta mean somthing, no?

I remeber it being talked about at Sega Cup, was where gameplay-wise, VF could go. A lot of people agreed that you couldn't take VF any further than it could be, outside of aesthetics.

5 and 3 are my favorite VFs due to movement. Yu Suzuki isn't coming back though. VF3

I thought I remember hearing long ago that Yu Suzuki at least did a little consulting for VF4. Does anyone remember if this was true?

VF4 still had input by Yu Suzuki. I remember in VF4 CD, there was some text about how Suzuki wanted the music direction changed from VF3 to VF4.

Having just played VF3tb on the Dreamcast fifteen minutes ago, I have to agree with everything you've said here. VF3 is such a special game, and everything about it is just so cool to me. The Dural stages and their alternate music are awesome, and the stages in general are overall just iconic. VF4FT and VF5FS should have let you choose from the three versions of a stage like VF3tb does! I also agree in that the game is definitely a sort of turning point for VF at least in terms of gameplay and just overall feel. Maybe it's the evading, maybe it's the missed throw animations, maybe it's that most of the voice clips introduced here are still being used, maybe it's that Lau can't take your whole life bar in one combo anymore; either way, I can't quite place what it is. The only thing about VF3 that might not have aged so well is the look of the characters' faces and maybe some of the costumes. I feel like some of their VF2 looks have aged better. Other than that, I'm hard pressed to find a fault with VF3. I could play it forever, and I'd be more than happy to shell out for a new console if Sega put out a good port. VF is really one series where every entry is unique to me and great in its own way!
