Just thought I'd comment on the Black Book.

The book is based on VF5 Ver.B and has quite a bit of system information.

As already mentioned, the command lists have frame data, and is in the following format:

    Name | Command | Hit Level | Damage | Exe | Active | Total | Guard | Hit | Counter | Escape Direction | Notes

Along with the command lists are two pages of tactics and two pages of combos for each character.

There is also some commentary on the included DVD, which I must say is very entertaining to watch! The character-based teams was a great idea which gave all the characters some decent in-battle coverage. Watching the Junior Team (kids around 10yrs old?) play was inspiring /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif especially Chibitarou's Jeffry!

To get the most out of the book, you'd need to be able to read Japanese, but the DVD certainly can be enjoyed by anyone.

With help, I'll be working to get the VF5 Ver.B command lists updated on VFDC very soon. As you can see from Srider's clash article, other relevant system information will also make its way here as well.

Hah, yeah, I guess some players didn't perform to expectation, but that's what tournaments are all about!

No prizes for guessing which character-team won though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Speaking of which, are you excited about the new Kage stuff Myke?

To be honest, aside from the interesting bounce combos he can pull with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, I'm not that excited about Kage. But it's probably because I've seen a million Kage match videos so he just seems so familiar now.

I'm more excited by characters like Brad and Lei Fei (who I'm considering taking up) in VF5.

Take up Lei Fei!! The English-speaking VF world needs more Lei Feis.

What about the twinkle toes tiptoeing tap dance that Kage can do now?

(yes, that alliteration was a stretch).

I'm sure you'll settle right back into him, like a glove /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

You have the new stance, after all, and the new kick/catch throw that even hits blocking characters. I'm sure you'll have fun with those. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

OK I ordered the book on amazon.co.jp, Luckily I didnt crew it up considering their order format is different from american amazons, and I havent tried reading Japanese since SHenMUe 2 import on the DC.
I got the confirmation email, so Im set.

    Question though;

Do you guys have a glossary of VF japanese playstyle terms?

What does nitaku mean? Whats ETEG (I think that has something to do with escape attacks).
Anyway Im a hardcore AMERICAN VF player , so Id like to know all of those Japanese terms. Since Ive been playing Vf over ten years I know what you guys are talking about in playstyles, but when you start dropping those japanese terms you lose me.

    Thanks in advance.

    GoDokunoDan:

I can try to list a few important terms used by the Japanese. There are a lot more, but these are frequently used:

    1. Nitaku - In a situation where you have advantage, your attack will beat their attack while your throw will beat their evade. It's basically a 50/50 option where you have the pressure.

    2. Gyaku Nitaku - Reversed Nitaku - In this case, you are at the receiving disadvantaged end where you would input an attack or powerful launch to beat your opponents attempt at getting you with a throw when he's in advantage position.

    3. Abare - An action where you would attack when you are in a disadvantage situation. Say you get counter hit low punched. The opponent goes into a throw where you press punch to interrupt.

    4. Kakutei - When a move is guaranteed, like after blocking certain moves or dodging to the side.

    5. Kusshin - Fuzzy guard, which is the art of exploiting the time it takes to crouch and get back up in order to crouch an incoming throw, but still manage to rise back up in time to block an eventual incoming mid hit.

    6. Sake - Dodge

    7. Senkou Nyuuryoku - Pre-input, or Buffering of moves. In Evo and FT you could buffer moves 11/12 frames in advance.

    8. Sosai - Clash, which is part of the new system to VF5

    9. Nage = Throw

    10. Nagenuke = Throw escape

    11. Sakenagenuke = Evade throw escape

    12. ETEG (English) Evade Throw Escape Guard - Sakenagenuke guard (Japanese), which is the ability to do throw escapes while evading and guarding after that to guard against possible delay attacks or strings from the opponent. Guard also prevents your throw animation from coming out.

    13. Dageki nagenuke - Attack throw escape. Usually done by doing low punch or any quick attack and immediately inputting throw escapes. This low punches an eventual delay attack and escapes a guaranteed throw.

    14. Hit kakunin - Hit confirmation, checking if the moves is blocked, gets normal or counter hit.

    15. Ooyan - ARE (All round escape), the special secret technique. Search it up here, you'll find info on it I presume.

    16. Tokujou - A high move which is special high. Can be ducked, but would beat any attack attempt.

    17. Soudatsusen - Prize battle

    18. Shougou - Rank or Title

    19. Doudansen - Same rank battle

    20. Toorina - The extra style rank you had in FT. Throws, attacks, combos etc.

    21. Reach - See raoul's post on next page

Anyhow, there are plenty more, but I think these are frequently used. Sorry if some didn't make sense. I'm nowhere near top player.

Chiefgutti, thanks for those terms. I forgot to reply here about it... but I started a VF terms thread where I defined the terms that GoDokunoDan asked about. If you don't mind, maybe you can copy and paste the post over in the other thread to keep it centralized. I'll updated the top post and credit you with your permission.

The link to the other thread is this...

Reach means "one away from winning", so anyone who has 2 rounds in best out of 5 match is "reaching"

they need to come out with a translated version of the black book. It'd be a good bathroom reader.

I agree. Not on the bathroom reader part, but the translation part. There was a series of English books by the publisher "Versus Books." There SFA2 and Tekken 3 guides were an outstanding resource for their time. The books were split into two parts: part 1 were the full color move lists, part 2 was the indepth strategy. Not the "in depth strategy" of most of the English strat guides, but a full 80 pages of nothing but black and white text. Versus books modeled their strategy guides after the Gamest Mook set of Japanese Strat guides. Good stuff.

Fortunately, people are translating the Black Book and posting in the individual character sections of the Dojo.

Also, your sig... "Goggle "a warriror must in battle be formless" and you'll only get one site to pop up. boya[/size] rocks on at least three levels. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Man I have such fond memories of Vs books. The Tekken 3 guide was my first initiation into the "hardcore" fighting game world. I was awed by the tiny text/black + white section at the end of the guide. Pages of setups, mind games, etc. Now we're stuck with Brady and Prima. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Could someone please help me? I am very interested in getting the book and dvd, but I don't speak/read Japanese, and I don't have access to anyone who does. How can I get a copy of the book and the dvd here in the US (or get to a site that that will allwo me to order the dvd and text in English)?
