Virtua Fighter 5 on Avoiding the Puddle

VF is already very accessible in terms of its mechanics and gameplay systems. The argument to say its got a steep learning curve is slightly false. The curve to be able to get into the game, start playing, and understand the key basics is very low.

It's easy to get new players to do moves and feel like they are in control. They curve from there to intermediate, and then to advanced, continues on, but with any opponent and any time spent in training mode players can get to intermediate, and thats enough for most people familiar with fighting games. Advanced players don't have to read frame data either but they need good regular competition and some dedication.

But you don't need to market or sell to the advanced players. We as players should be more interested in projecting the interest in getting new players and in having a few techniques to help teach players become accustomed to the game. It's very easy to do that.

Everything else has to come from SEGA - make the game very accessible to start playing at the beginner level; attractive story mode, great training mode, great online modes, character customisation and a bit of flash; along with some actual marketing and tournament support.

OK I think I am going to attempt a translation of the broken shit those Tekken guys were saying:

Actually those extraneous "special effects" when you hit, really annoy me. It obstructs me from the actual impact conveyed by the character models.

I'm actually really annoyed at the huge hit effects on SSF4. The animations are great, you don't need those huge sparks which covers up the great animations!! At least make those sparks very transparent!

I didn' t even know the game was coming out until I spotted someone on my friend list playing the demo.

 

Bah, I hate it when people give Tekken more credit than it deserves. Tekken is not lightning in the bottle. It didnt do everything "right". Tekken was just lucky to be released on the system that sold over 100 million units, the playstation. That playerbase skyrocketed it into the mainstream. If Tekken was released on the Saturn , and Vf was released on the playstation, Tekken as a series would languish in obscurity right now nad VF would be mainstream.

A lot of horrible, broken games get launched into being household names simply because they were released on the dominant console, Gear of War for example. It's a complete turd, it was just released when all the xbox players were starving for Halo3 to come out, so all they had was gears, and they jumped on the bandwagon.

^That's neither here nor there. Don't focus on the wrong part of the story , brother. VF is not missing some magic ingredient like kung fu Pandas, boxing Kangaroos, or bouncing tit animations. No series turns it around and becomes a success story at its 4th sequel. For VF to have ever been mainstream, VF1 through 3 would have to been released on the Playstation 1 & 2.

 

Those disappointed in T4 stayed with Tag til 5 dropped. Its all over the TZ boards from yester-year...

The story may not have been deep (Vf5 anyone?) The game was good and Graphically made everything else step they shit up.
Halo 3 came out a year later and it was Garbage. Thank God VF5 and COD4 came out that same fall.


Not to mention ADVERTISEMENT sold Gears with good marketing graphics and presentation. Gears sold 5 million and so did halo the following year. You sound like a Burned out PS fanboy.

I'm sick of this retarded notion that the VF series has to emulate Tekken in order to be successful in the west. That ship has sailed, over a decade ago. It was a Sega series on Sega systems, and it sold Sega numbers(low). That's not going to change this late in the game. But don't focus on the wrong part of the conversation. So alot of console exclusives actually suck and sell huge numbers , get over it. Have the moderators ever thought of making a thread for personal arguments and insults. And every time arguments get personal like this they could be moved that thread? I think it would help limit the amount and the duration of occurrences. I know there have been times where i was doing some ill advised arguing back and forth and if it had just been sucked out of the thread and stuck somewhere else it would have been done and done.
