Yeah, I'd rather not have to go through ads either.

 

I find that a lot of sites that have ads I have to turn java script off so i'm not getting constant pop ups. I'm guessing shoutbox doesn't work when javascript is off so that's definitely not a good idea.

 

For the love of God no ads! VFDC having with no ads is one of it's amazing perks. I have been coming here for over a decade and even when I'm done playing I'll probably still be coming around to see how the community is doing (especially if Myke puts the virtual arcade back * hint hint * ).

A part of the reason it's nice to come here is because you get to see ONLY what you are interested in. No random pop ups, no random videos start playing that you can't locate to shut it up before you feel like punching your computer screen.

While I'm sure Myke probably don't want to go that route I think donations is not a bad option. I bet within the first round of donations we could generate enough money to pay for a couple years of hosting. And to stay ahead of things as the anniversary date each year approaches regardless if we are paid up for 1,2,3,4 years Myke just posts a simple reminder about donations on the front page to generate more funds. As long as we stay ahead of the game I don't see how the loyal users here wouldn't be able to come up with the necessary money needed to pay for a year of hosting.

Ads aren't such a big deal. If we could limit them to posts that appear after a certain number of posts made in each thread we won't have to worry about clutter with the banner, Shout Box, Active Topics, etc., or the type of ad that Manji joked about earlier.

I'd be happy to donate money too. Whether it's required or not to help pay for the server, it would be a good idea. I would prefer if there was no exclusive content for supporters. Make the benefits cosmetic, like maybe a bigger avatar size limit or the choice to change the color of your name.
