A lot of Latinos refer to themselves as Hispanic. (even though you are correct regarding the definition of Hispanic) So much so that we have to program our surveys to first ask the respondent (survey participant) "Are you Hispanic or Latino?" If they answer yes, then we ask "In addition to being Hispanic or Latino what race are you?" (we had to do this on account of so many participants answering "Hispanic" for the race demographic, which was not a valid answer)

Most if not all latinos refer to themselves as hispanic, not sure why exactly. You sound like your involved in an interesting line of work.

I think the confusion to most of the so-called hispanic or latino people regarding their own race here in America comes from the oversimplification of throwing everybody from a huge and very diverse part of the globe into the same bag.

Calling everybody from the U.S. down "Latin Americans" (which shortens as "Latinos") regardless of race, customs and origins is a little confusing. Think only of the vast majority of people in the region who are mostly of Native American descent. They are being disappropriated from their true origins and histories in the name of oversimplification by being called "latino". People of 100% European descent who, as well as people in the U.S, considered themselves "white" in their countries of origin are being called "latino" as well. So in my opinion it's clearly not a good definition from the get go.

In Italy we call Latin to the people of France, Spain, Italy, Romania and Portugal. And for the people in the Americas we just care about the ones of Italian descent. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Yes, it is true that italians are the true "latin" people... over time the term has evolved to describe a wide spectrum of different cultures.

In the New York City school system, theres no option for "Latino" only for Hispanic. You get a option for White Hispanic or Black Hispanic. A Decade ago(IIRC) Parents in Washington Heights try to change it. Instead, they let us change the names of a few school into Domincan Presdients names(Like Juan Pablo Durate for instance)

Thats strange considering most latinos/hispanics probaly do not think of themselves as "white" at all, despite most having some caucasian ancestry.

If mexicans didnt have spanish acestry none of them would have moustaches, as most indigenous people mayan/aztec included, do not have facial hair or much body hair.

On SRK they have the princible of "black untill proven otherwise" haha. I only saw New York but it does seem the fighting game scene in America is dominated by black dudes.

Me, I'm of terrorist descent. I'm also the only one not sporting the NYG tee in the pic cause I didn't have 10 bucks on me right then.

I think they have it like that because of the Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Brazilans, Cubans and others from South American that come in different shades.

That's a Southern Italian stereotype. You're probably from the North of the country. I'm from Saronno, in provincia di Varese (20min N of Milano), do you know where your ancestors were from?
