What Strategy Gets Under Your Skin?

I'm willing to bet that that "turtle" Jacky only turtled due to the unpredictable nature of their mashing opponent.

Ever thought of that? Mashers tend to get out of traps and set ups that they had NO IDEA they were even in. Mashers don't even know when they're at disadvantage or at advantage. The learning process in this game, it's sometimes a blow to the ego to dummy your own strategies down to deal with mashing. And if it comes to turtling to do so, that's just how it is sometimes.

p.s. no I wasn't the Jacky player, cause I don't use Jacky anymore. However I DO know Jacky player youre describing and I know they don't play like how you described unless.

This would be a valid point and one worth mentioning if the case was that I truly were "mashing." Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. If you were to ask me, I'd say that this particular player found himself frustrated with an offense he couldn't figure out, called it "mashing" and eventually resorted to turtling.

In any case, I (along with majority of Eileen users) commonly use 3 particular string starters and I can identify these for you:
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, (variation)
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, (variation)
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, (variation)

In order for any of these strings to work effectively, some well-articulated thought of your opponent is required. This easily rules out the notion of "mashing" as mashing is nothing more than mindless/mechanical bashing of what is often the same button, without any regard for what your opponent is doing. Now if the argument was I did nothing more than /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (which can easily be stopped with a simple 2P) mashing would then be something worth mentioning. However, if you lose to such a strategy it may be time to reevaluate your competitiveness.

I can reassure, that there was no mashing of the sort taking place. Now turtling on the other hand, there was plenty of that. In fact, there was absolutely no objections to it.

The impression or image you leave me from your posts is one of "vanity."

There is no right or wrong way to play the game. People play this game for different reasons.

If you are playing the game for the sake of "competition" - you use whatever strategy works.

If you are playing to learn the game - you try out different strategies.

If you are playing with your own rules or how "should" the game be played - play only your friends or people with the same mentality.

If you are playing this game to get stronger, instead of critiquing other people, be more critical of yourself.

Vain is a description of myself that I hear often. But it's also a description of me often casted by the intimidated, the defensive, or those who are overly content for the way things are. I do have a high-standard for play habits and methods. I believe this standard is an important factor in my strengthening within this game.

Fact is, everyone has a complaint--not everyone makes a thread. Some of us are just more expressive. Some of us feel that this act of reciprocation with others only helps our understanding of matters. My differences with others are usually not the product of me having radical ideas that no one agrees with. The only thing that seems out of place about me is my willingness to 'say something' and occasionally 'do something.'

It doesn't make my points or opinions any less valid if someone finds annoyance in me stating them. In Gears of war, there are people who rely solely on chainsawing their opponents. There are others who swap every weapon on the map with sniper rifles. Is it so wrong for me to state my opinion on these matters? Surely, these people are all entitled to do as they please--as they all paid the costs to play online. But in all fairness, I'm equally entitled to state my dissatisfactions as well.

I on the other hand (playing with DS vanessa) LOVE those brad players - attack? hand hold knee. attack? hand hold upper . attack? hand hold shoulder break. Sometimes they get wise and try starting their strings with a mid kick. Needless to say it gets reversed really quick. It really depends on the character you are using, not all of us hate the same tactics. I bet an Aoi (or a LeiFei who actually knows about the punch-elbow auto-reversing stance) player would love playing one of those brads.

Same about keep away players. I love those too. I bet Pai players like them too.

Isn't that that's the way Aoi is supposed to be played actually? Minus the trash talk that is...

You can state your opinion as much as you want, no one is stopping you. I am just stating my opinion, just like you.

    It's an opinion free-for-all, lol.

No, I hear where you're coming from though. Some people communicate realistically. I'm often guilty of not doing that. It's almost like I'm whining... just a bit more iterated than usual whining. I can understand all the different ways that comes off to others.

Don't get your assessment wrong though--I'm a very down-to-Earth person. I might add that I'm fairly fun to play as well.

Or just "ciscorey" my match connection. i.e. pull the plug midmatch.

Also, I'm pretty sure that you would probably beat me too anyway though. That oblivious mashing style? personally I'm not good enough to reliably deal with it just yet, but I'm learning. Mostly by getting much more solid with my fundamentals.

p.s. you seem to be way too cocky.

Good players adapt to strategies and learn how to beat them. Bad players cry about strategies or in this case, harass you on xbl about how you play, and never try to learn how to beat them.

The comment about watching VF.TV to see how characters are played is completely irrelevant. Players have to adjust according to how their opponents play. You can't play the same way against people who mash. Every time I try mind games or side shuffles against beginners, 90% of the time I get hit out of it.

To make a retarded story short,

I lost to ciscorey about 5 or 6 times playing "normal" before I figured out how to fight against him, I just continuously baited his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif after a move I had minimal disadvantage with. He couldn't handle the Pak Sao and DM /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. You got out classed 4 games in a row and had to be a poor sport about it.

In your world nothing you do is wrong and everything someone else does is. This isn't your world, grow up and deal with it. It's part of the road to becoming a better player.

What really bothers me about your posts is how you feel like you have the authority to tell a person how to play.

  12. CiscoRey

    CiscoRey Well-Known Member

In all fairness, intricate mind games shouldn't be played on beginners, considering they have no idea that they're taking part in the mind game that you're playing. Beginners should be punished up close and swiftly, after all they are just beginners aren't they?

On the other hand, I think it's pretty arrogant to assume that because someone ironically interrupts your attempts at setting them up that they're automatically "mashing" or a "beginner" for that matter. Ever thought that they might be purposely making it difficult for you to set them up?

All said, I'm competent enough to know that although I'm not exactly the most experienced player, I'm far from your typical beginner. If I were that bad of a player, you wouldn't have lost your first couple of matches to me.

But I do credit you. You did exactly as you said--you adjusted. You backed up and played from what you felt was a safer distance. You avoided playing me up close and personal for reasons that seem pretty obvious. That's something that should be easy to admit without having to pitch this whole "beginner" nonsense. Because at the end of the day, turtling against a beginner just doesn't add up logically.

Granted, yes, applying yourself enough to play against any play style in important, but at the same time, if we want to bring the players of the VF5 ranks, we've gotta really be able to make them WANT to get better, and want to be competitive and that doesn't work either way.

Can I beat /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif spammers? Sure, but I don't want to waste my time playing them if that's either all they know or all they want to do. I enjoy having more active and dynamic matches, not hunting down the one anti-strategy for their "play style". If you don't know how your character works, I sure as hell don't want to lose to you, because if I asked how something works, NEITHER of us will know how to explain it, so what do I gain from it? If you lose to me, will you care to take my advice?

People who resort to such strategies should understand the motives behind their play styles just as much as other players like myself should understand the importance of patience and observation in matches so that the chats in match don't turn into huge shouting matches and unneccessary stress over something that ULTIMATELY DOESN'T MATTER in the long run.

It's meant to be fun, so play in a manner that IS fun, but not at the expense of your opponent.

Personally, I dislike being stomped on after matches because I think it's kinda rude, and trying to send an unnecessary message, but I also understand some people just do it because they want to do stuff for the hell of it. It doesn't have to make full sense, it's just a peeve of mine. Is there really a point in doing it?

I jump on people because I just have to do something after the fight ends but if the person has a problem I won't do it. But then I will do something else that will probably annoy my opponent. . .

It's not being rude though. I haven't met one chornic 2p spammer yet. Well I have but after playing so much everytime I see a 2p that I blocked I do something cause i know I have advantage. If I can't beat you up close I will find SOMETHING to beat you with and trust me it won't be 2p spam cause I forget to do it a lot lmao.

There you go again trying to tell people how to play. I'll say what I did again earlier.. this isn't your world, everyone plays differently.

You instigated this situation and I don't like how you are trying to make yourself look like the victim. You're the person who insulted the way I play, and from what I've read on these forums you've also insulted other players and even dropped on them.

I didn't assume anything I lost to you multiple times to find my solution. You did exactly as I stated in my last post and it ended up working against you when I set you up for it.

Toji I don't know what you're going on about. You're on a completely different spectrum. He's the one who joined my games.

I get it, so all the other players like Konjou Akira, Black Bauer CTU etc, should just go easy on everyone so everyone "enjoys" the game?

Yeah let's lower the bar instead of raising. Good idea.

^sarcasm, i forgot i gotta say that cause no tone is present.

Dude, is it so hard to just say "Yes, I turtled"?

You bested me in those last four matches. I agree, I lost. In fact, yes, I have to learn how to fight against turtling players more efficiently. Hell while we're at it, I need to brush up against DM spammers as well. But by no means is it written anywhere that I have to respect it.

You're a good player. For a multitude of reasons, I don't think you should turtle. If that isn't constructive criticism I don't know what is.

Yes, yes, Plague. It is true. To bitch about things to the extent that it gets in your head is unhealthy and will not help you to win in the end. That said, there is a time for playing and a time for bitching. Some shit sucks and that is that or so I like to think anyway.

I don't bitch everytime I lose. Some dudes are just good and I must give them props. Konjou beats me 65% (more maybe?) of the time and I never finish a match thinking that he plays like a punk or anything (not that anyone cares what I think). Those matches are good. Dennis beats me down and annoys me, but I also acknowledge that he has a lot of skill. Adam Yuki beats me with sheer skill and I can only take my hat off to him. Yosuke has beaten me to point that I forget my name and place in the universe, but what can I do but take my hat off to the guy?

These guys are on a different level than some of the guys I fight against and who sometimes beat me. Some losses really frustrate me, even though I know that if there were not holes in my game, those losses would not happen. In the long run I can work to increase my skills. In the short run I can bitch. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
