They already have the cover art for Perfect Dark on the XBOX Live official site actually... And screen shots too. Looks sharp.

@Masterpo: Playing a perfect AI that 100% mimics all sorts of human competition isn't possible, why even argue using such idea? Even if it was a good AI, it still couldn't mimic the emotions that go into human comp. I have a headset but I hardly use it, but that doesn't influence the human factor in the end. I have had matches where my opponent didn't "click" into the match until near the end, and suddenly I got my butt raped. How can an AI mimic such behavior, go cheater-mode when it reaches 10% health? That would be just another silly pattern. There are too many variables in human comp that an AI will never be able to make it feel like another person.

A really good AI would be amazing to keep me in shape and practice some stuff, but it will never replace the fun and diversion of competing against someone else. The simple fact that I feel different when I'm facing a real person already makes the whole experience something unique that AI can't replicate no matter how well it plays.

You talk about Online competition not rising to the level of offline competition or even AI sometimes. I hear that a lot, but I have to tell you that may be true in your city, but over here it's the other way around. A few weeks ago I fought a bunch of local SF4 players who will be taking part in a tournament here this sunday. Guess what? I beat them all several times easily. Out of 40 matches I lost 2. Most of them have beaten the AI on Hardest before too. Against Online competition I'm just a below average fighter most of time.

When there was no Online for FGs I had no choice but to have the AI as my best (sometimes my ONLY) opponent until I got bored and moved on to something else.

Fallout 3 doesn't deserve the comparison, it's a game made to be played alone, the single-player experience is heightened. It's not about facing competition.

Either way, we have no VF5 Online nor insanely awesome AI on the PS3. So I'm with SuperPanda in regards to Tekken 6. Looking forward to it.

And I really don't like sports games at all so I'll turn down on your UFC suggestion, thanks though.

Closed minded people also said that putting man on the moon wasn't possible.

Blizzard, a company far superior to Sega regarding listening to the most hardcore fans, is actually working on a dynamic A.I. that emulates players for Starcraft II. The A.I. will have random patterns and mistakes programmed into it. It won't be psychic, meaning it has to seek out your spawn point through exploration, and won't just go straight to your spawn if it's one of many.

Blizzard the same company that paved the way for online game play and MMOs with Battle.net and WoW. And Blizzard the same company that really launched and maintained competitive gaming by sticking with Starcraft for so long.

Human like A.I. in fighting games is possible. Look at the huge leap in FG A.I. with VF4EVO. Another leap like that we are talking about getting into the territory that Masterpro is describing.
Do you think if someone threw the VF5 version C A.I. online that you would immediately be able to pick it up at all? Odds are that most people would have no idea. I'm sure it would take me a few matches to realize it was an A.I. and not a person (aside from the fact that the A.I. doesn't attack post round). A really, really well programmed A.I. would take even more rounds to discover that it wasn't human. Voight-Kampf anyone?

We'll see how well Starcraft II's A.I. is but if it is as hyped as Blizzard is making it then...if we ever get VF5FT I hope Sega makes the A.I. better than VF4EVO level.

As I said, it's still an AI, still not human. Even if it does random things or mistakes, it's still a machine. There are many variables into human competition, from fingers being hurt to anger to complete understanding of my opponent's situation and using that in my favor. How can I tell what type of AI I'm fighting? It can be dynamic and surely it can be fun and help me out step up my game. It can be so good that, as you said, if you threw it online I wouldn't notice it was an AI until a few matches later. I'm not disagreeing with you on this, if you read carefully I'm not being close-minded, I'm stating the obvious..

It won't be human and you can't state otherwise. I can't brag to the AI (not that I do it actually, but deep inside we all think of something nice about ourselves when we beat someone) nor can I feel that taste of overcoming the competition that another person gives me when they lose, it'll feel like getting over an obstacle, which is cool too, but different. That's just like training just a more efficient one than fighting a predictable/flawed AI

I don't disagree with you at all... except that I need to play Devil's advocate and remind you that discussing modern intelligent A.I. for VF5 is nothing more than theory fighting.

Current VF5 console doesn't have new-era super-adaptable A.I. At least, not yet, and the way things are, not ever. Will VF5:R have it? Maybe, maybe not. But the point of the whole thing is: where is 5R, will we ever get to see it, and if so, when?

AFTER those questions have been answered, then we can discuss the possibilities of great AI in single-player play. But until then, both of them don't exist.

    Seriusly now,

I want to spend some time playing Rega Rally Revo,

I have Dead Space and Mirrors Edge untouched, played only a few hours of DMC4, GTA4 and LAD, Lost Odyssey, Dead Rising, and many many other games. I have maybe 1000+ games in 3-4 cardboard boxes, crazy stuff.

    DV,

Trust me I feel your pain [IMG] I want VF5R too [IMG]
I hear where UR at on the competition thing, very sensible
    points UR making.

But on the AI thing, keep this in mind we're just at 2nd generation AI on next gen consoles. The whole development cycle for next gen has focused on bringning online play, how to do DLCs, and learning how to get the most out of the graphics and sound capabilities of next gen. There has been some innovation done with AI, but nothing major.

I work for a research group where AI is one of the primary focuses.(Not Game AI though) But some of the things AI research produces will soon filter down to games and I'm telling you that over the next decade AI in gaming is going to
be revolutionized. Once you see 3rd or 4th generation AI in
games its over(really), In many instances you are going to prefer the AI because it will be more enjoyable than playing
a human. I'm very sorry to say this, because we all like the fact that we are so unpredictable and spontaneous, and creative, and innovative, that the notion that a piece software
will be better is offensive. But it will be here within the next decade.

Also keep in mind once the game publishers have this kind of AI
then it doesn't matter how many 'real people' log on to play their games. They'll have you playin against AI online and you won't know it. You'll either say damn that guy is good, or damn that guy can't play, or damn that was a weird combo, etc.
And if the AI responds with text message trash talking you'll really be fooled. I know it sounds hard to take, but at some point in the future you will remember this post, sayin wow Po
was talking that !@#$ a few years ago, I thought he was sniffing to much glue [IMG]

An AI that is dynamic, evolvable, and custimizable will be your best gaming partner in the future. Dude I'll give you even some more bad news, you will pay extra money based on the level
of AI that you download or use. Right now this comes in the form of beating the game in normal mode, and then opening up some harder more challenging mode. But down the line, AI level will be something that the gaming publishers are going to sell you for extra. If you want AI level 3 or 4 its going to cost you an additional $x.xx, If you want to play against more than the usual AI you'll be able to request more but its going to cost you an additional $x.xx

Right now its about graphics, sound, online play, and DLC, in the near future its going to be about maps, game levels, and AI levels, and the sad thing is will complain alittle here and there but we will in the end pay.

Yep, save this post somewhere, so that you can look back at it and laugh while you're in the process of getting your @## kicked by some 4th generation AI that is more human than human [IMG]

I've gotten bored of VF5. Temporarily.

I just ordered Skate 2, but it won't be here within the next 2 weeks.

Hey Masterpo, the microtransaction for better AI sounds good. I wouldn't mind paying to have the perfect sparring partner available to me anytime.

As I said, while I believe such an awesome AI can exist, it still doesn't mimic the feel of fighting another person for several little feelings that go through me when I play and beat or lose to someone else. It'll be the perfect training partner though. That's why I still want online play in my games.

Thanks for the article btw [IMG]

Ima still be playing VF5, hek I only know how to use one person lol, so by the time the next one comes out hopefully i'll have a better understanding of the other characters strings and whatnot by using/learning them some (counters and sabaki's in the middle of your strings coming soon hahah).

Other than that, ima still be jammin on my plastic drums for Rock Band 2. They come out with new songs every week so that game will never get old for me.

Fallout 3 will get playtime, i've had that game for like 5 months and only have a few hours in it. I literally just got to the first city after screwin around and searching for stuff. That game is real fun and i'm happy to pull something like that down from the shelf to play since it has so much exploration and all that in it.

    Ninja Gaiden 2.

And that's pretty much all I have to play right now. I might get Skate 2 eventually, for some reason i'm not as hyped about it as I was before it's release. I think it's cause I got RB2 instead at the time.

I'm kinda looking for a good horror game to play and make me jump out my chair also. I'm thinking FEAR 2, that demo was pretty crazy. I don't really know what else is out there.

Just try Dead Space. Like a resident evil but placed in a spaceship. And the sound is... Horrifying!

Why, a simple question to answer for any fighting game player: playing VF. And 3s, and Tekken.

As I said earlier: the sense of pwnage that only another person losing to you can provide. Among other things, but for me this is a really important one.
Think of Michael Phelps (or any other professional swimmer). What's the difference between swimming by himself in the pool and swimming with other pros nearby? Technically there's none, since it's all about being "fast" and beating times. He's probably beaten his best times in training sessions before. However doing so against several swimmers in the Olympics feels that much better and more meaningful.

I think that's why we aren't abandoning man vs man fighting just because the AI is better. One thing doesn't make the other obsolete, they can co-exist.

Either way, as long as I have none of these in VF, I'll be playing Tekken 6!

VF5 .... the occasional bout of streetfighter 4 maybe, when im in the mood for some goofy fun.

Still playing Cod4 sometimes when im in the mood for a good shooter. Eagerly awaiting Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams and Dead Rising 2.

Picked up Star Ocean the other day, seems interesting so far, although im not too into these square enix RPG's. Looks like a long one though, three discs!

Me, I'm probably gonna hop between VF 2 and 5, and maybe some OutRun and Saints Row 2 until another VF comes out. Either that, or until I can find an arcade XD
