Oh, and Tae Kwon Do is Korean, yet people who practice in it still wear Gi's. So I'm sure it's just a universal kinda thing.

Tae Kwon Do doesn't use a karategi/judogi. It uses a dobok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobok).

There are several different disciplines of Tae Kwon Do, some of which actually do wear the traditional gis.
