Why fighting games suck

    Agreed. I know nobody here said fighting games require no skill, they said FPS require more , which is a joke. Both genres require hand and eye coordination , lets leave it at that. Some might say not playing FPS online is a pussy tactic in and of itself. What's the alternative? 4player split screen can be fun , although the visuals suffer. That said, Ive had more fun playing Halo 2 4pl split screen than I ever did online. It's better with friends .

    In no way was I agreeing with Master Po's craziness , but I couldn't wait until he jumped into this topic. It looked like it had Po written all over it.

    Po, I don't know who you're trying to kid, but I'd personally love to see the source code that you claim supports your assertion that:

    Being a software engineer, I'm very familiar with C and C++, so this should be entertaining. But before you waste my (and your) time, let me throw this out there:

    "Doing more work" is not a measure of "skill". I could write a very simple game that pitted two players against each other. The only input available would be a single button, where the objective was to press this button more than your opponent in a space of 30 seconds. Even though this type of game requires a tremendous amount of "work" by the user, requires a huge amount of stamina to play for even 5 minutes, it doesn't prove squat about the "skill" required to play. And the best part? The source code for such a game would laughably trivial.

    So all this is just to say that digging up two pieces of code in an attempt to demonstrate that one requires more "work" from the user than the other ultimately proves nothing in the context of the "skill" discussion.

    I'm really not trying to call him out. I'm just trying to say that he's biased for one genre over another. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but don't state opinions as fact because that's essentially what my gripe is with the article that started this mess.

    And to be fair, the whole thing is a bit dishonnest on my part, I've been making video games for quite a few years.

    No, my friend I think you need to see the code, because that will be the only thing that makes my point unquestionable.

    Reaching the conclusion is easy. You take the two pieces of code, compare the number, diversity, delta-sensitivity, and associated rules/matrices to the input, and whichever one has the most requires the most work on the part of the user. That's easy right?

    If I have more inputs, more types of inputs, more types of input windows and more rules associated with my inputs then as a program I require more effort than you.

    But of course we need source code to show that. Here are a couple of URLs that you can peruse at your leisure [IMG]

    Doom Source Code

    Open Mortal Kombat

    As fighting game fans, nerds, techno people etc, more of you should have a solid understanding of how these things work. Especially those of you that have video game programming history.

    Especially those of you that have implemented video games. All of us that have implemented video games know that one of the very first video games you're taught to implement is first person shooters. These are among the easiest games to implement and the easiest to play. I'm stunned that so many don't have a clue in this regard. Every game, techy school, Devry, etc out there shows you how to make your very own FPS [IMG] Those of you that claim to know anything at all about game development knows that's true.

    On the other hand, fighting games are just the opposite, among the hardest to make, and require the most skill to play.

    ROFLMBBAO The sad thing is, so many of yall proclaim to be fighting game enthusiasts. Yet, you don't know whether FPS
    are easier or not [IMG] Every single person that disagrees with me and plays Virtua Fighter and FPS , should turn in their VF sticks, pads, disks, etc [IMG]

    bool Fighters_harder = 1;
    cout << (Fighters_harder ? "Yep Fools" : " Nope Fools") ;
    cout << endl;
    return(FromShaolin);
    }

    Man, i'm used to nonsense in your posts but usually they're normally fun to read, this takes the biscuit though. Biggest bunch of poppycock i've read in a while.

    Fuck, Masterpo is a GENIUS!

    We don't even need FS, we can just see who can make the most complicated C++ code and he will be the VF champ!

    I've added links to my post for Doom and open Mortal Kombat,
    It should be pretty clear from there [IMG]

    That anyone can make the connection that source code complexity = game skill complexity is just baffling and stunning. I mean, even if he does it as a joke, just that he can formulate such a thought is just so retarded it's beyond words.

    But please, carry on.

    For all my simple brethren out there that have trouble reading and digesting long passages.

    FPS (in general) require SKILL
    Fighting Games (in general) require more SKILL

    If that's not obvious to you after having played intermediate and advanced players of both kinds of games
    then you have a mental disability or disorder [IMG]

    This is pure nonsense. By your own logic, Street Fighter is harder than VF. More buttons, you know.

    If input is your be all end all argument, it's going to get silly.

    bla bla bla

    Are you joking... Making something that enables you to move in 3d and fires something isn't quite like making an FPS. Having made a few of them I can assure you they are far from easy.

    What FPS and fighting game have you released to come to this conclusion?

    That's because my opinion on FPS games, and their difficulty levels, is based on playing with people that are like me - not exceptional. I know that if I played against some pros, like one of testers at work, I'd think the genre was a lot more difficult. Or simply put, I don't talk about what I don't know.

    Well I don't know about you guys but I'm sold. The doom sourcecode was 354kb and the Open Source Mortal Kombat one for Linux (I'm talking about the FULL package here guys) was 49mb. Clearly fightinggames are 100x harder to play - the evidence is right there.

    Brb suicide.

    lol, po man you already forgot who cuz was? and now you dissing the man who helped (in some way) make the game you liked (Assassin's Creed II), way to go! lol -_-

    "I have deep knowledge about many genres of video games, very deep knowledge. Actually, I can't afford to be wrong. There are some people who do know who I am offline and who watch what I say online. It would be personally costly to me offline, if I'm caught with incorrect positions online."

    W...T..F hahahaha, that is some scary shit...

    i dunno man after all this C++ shit, you sir lost the little credibility you had.
