Which is why I look at the games played vs rank. Hunter with 5000 games is probably no good. Not to say that a destroyer with 2000 games would be but it more than probably gives you an idea of what's up.
I've limited experience on ranked but so far it's held mostly true and when it hasn't it's "new" players who know their stuff or alt. accounts or just pure lagswitchers. Most of whitch are rare.

I think win/lose ratio is a better indicator than rank to be honest. Someone who is 7th Dan but only had a few games is definitely someone I would take a little bit of care than a hunter with many games under their belt.

I don't understand why people bash the number of wins and rank displayed, this is just an attempt of indicating how good someone is so when someone is looking for someone of similar ability, they don't get drawn up against someone mega experienced (less likely to anyway).

If you lose on purpose then that is being dishonest and is really an exception.

    EDIT: Win/lose ratio 748/788 = 0.949 (48.7%).

So you just contradicted yourself? I agree with Combolammas, and comparison between number of games and win % to the rank (ie. How few games did he play to reach that rank) is what I check myself when facing an unknown player. And so do you apparently.

You can play as many games as you want, but you will practically only gain high rank by beating other high rank players.

Also if someones win% is approaching 75% he is propably a good player.

ER... Yeah, guess I did - ooops. Maybe I shouldn't have said rank but number of games. Sorry.

Since I don't select opponents based on skill level I don't worry about all these numbers and ranks. The only reason I decline someone is if connection is bad. I need to see at least one bar on there. The only way you will know someone's skill level is in the match. I've fought Stormlords and won but have also been smacked down by peeps from the bottom of the kyu. Rank and win/loss ratios don't matter. The only thing that matters is whether your opponent is about to kick your ass or not :) .

Yes, me too, I play anyone who has a green bar AND either a green or yellow smiley face.

The number of games they've played/matches they've won are visible AFTER you/they've accepted the challenge. During that time, you're looking at the loading screen anyway so I look at the figures and get an idea of how capable they are. I think everyone who has posted so far agrees to a certain degree that rank/win ration can't truly reflect on how skillfull someone is but the divide seems to be one camp sees these statistics as utter pointless info whereas the other sees it as a "clue" as to whether they will be any good at all.

In real life, people do look at people's appearances to get a visual clue of their opponent's strength - they understand that appearance isn't everything, however it's the only info available before you go head to head. Nothing wrong with using everything you can to prepare yourself.

Which, again, is why you should probably look at rank vs # of games. If you look at just the numbers you can't tell if I'm just someone who's picking easy matches, occasionally getting it wrong or someone who actually get in any good connectioned fights, win some, lose some.
If you just look at my rank you can't tell my strength. I'm low enough to be any random scrub (which quite frankly isn't too far from the truth :D)
If you look at # games (~250) compared to rank (sentinel, if memory serves) you're probably getting somewhere.

From what I've seen so far most people above assassin seem to know what they should be doing while the people in my ranktier and the next one seem to range all the way from better than me to total scrubs. From what I've seen I'd say that is pretty much a another visual que for strong players: being above assassin. Most people aren't cherrypicking assholes after all.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you should ask for rank on top of that rating because that rating alone isn't any better than looking at rank alone.

    my ratio is pretty abysmal:

    419 W
    1205 L
    1624 Total

    419 / 1205 ~ 0.35
    419/1624 ~ 0.26

Most of the games have been against players like C Money, but I've lost a decent share of games to newbies as well. As long as I improve my performance, even when I lose, though, I'm OK.

I really want to post on this thread even though I don't know for sure what mine is... I'd like to say it's somewhere around the 75% range... can't be for certain though. Once I figure it out, I will edit it in so I get it right.

Nah you didn't improve. You got worse, and you had to rely on DC again to not lose your rank. Pathetic.

But so what! I Pick who I fight. I almost never fight anyone over my rank (while in rank mode) And I only fight ppl at my rank or under my rank if I like their Ring Name (no joke) Yep, if you've got a 'sketchy' ring name, we'll probably never fight o_O

I duck most ppl on VFDC in rank mode, because they usually are well beyond my rank, BUT!!!! I'll play anybody with any rank VFDC or not in non ranked mode. (just invite me) PSN: lastmonk

I've stated this b4 and most plyers on this site detest my reasoning. But, I don't agree with the ranking system in VF. I feel once you've earned a rank, you've earned it! Or at the very least you shouldn't be able to be demoted out of whatever group you're in. So, I got the rank I like, and I don't fight anyone that could potentially take it LOL! There's always someone better than you (ALWAYS!) and if you play that person enough they can demote you (which is what I disagree with!) Just because you've finally met your match, doesn't mean you didn't originally earn your rank. And the less players there are online, the harder it is to earn that rank back, if someone far superior to you takes it. And I could care less how they handle rank in the Japanese Arcades! To suggest that I only deserve a rank as long as I can defend it signals to me either the rank is truly meant to be temporary, or stop playing rank as soon as you get the one you want!

I think MasterPo the lastmonk Defender, has such a nice ring to it. VF 4 Evo use to have a Protector rank, and that was the one that I kept on that version. But Defender fits me. So when you look me up on the leader boards that's what you'll see LOL

You DC 4times, so I win anyway, which proves that you couldn't beat me fair and square, and had to resort on DC / pulling.
