Well, the first round of group games is over and it certainly had it's share of surprises and shocks, especially Spain's loss against Switzerland. The tactics employed by the Swiss worked perfectly with effectively 9 men behind the ball, and there was a bit of luck with the goal mouth scramble which eventually led to the winning goal. Torres was slow and his touch was heavy, which is undertandble given his recent non-play and injury issues. Unfortunately for Spain, bringing him on was a gamble that didn't pay off and overall they lacked cohesion a bit of creativity in breaking down the Swiss defence. Navas (I think it was) was very active and had a lot of ball down the right wing, but his numerous crosses into the box (I lost count!) were wasteful. Alonso had an insprired shot deflect off the crossbar which, had it went in, would have given Spain the boost they sorely needed.

So far, the only two teams that have really stood out for me are Brazil (Maicon's goal was a cracker!), Argentina and Germany, but neither of these teams have played tough opposition yet.

Now that all the teams have played, the second round should really start to heat up, evidenced by Uruguay's impressive win over SA.

Can't wait for the remaining matches!

Argentina Vs. S. Korea should be fun tomorrow.

Oh and @ the Vuvuzela haters, apparently networks are installing filters to buffer out the the hum better. So may make it more enjoyable for those it upsets.

Switzerland beating Spain was the biggest bomb so far. Congrats to the Swiss!

From its previous 41 games, Spain has lost only one (Confederations cup). Its world cup qualifiers Spain won all games with zero losses.

Spains record vs Switzerland since 1925 until yesterday: 18 games, zero losses.

I wonder how Spain will handle this from now on.

Switzerland's win potentially leads to an interesting second round: Brazil vs Spain.

Also, I think South Africa are done for the tournament now. That and that my friend is not happy as he had Uruguay to win 2-0, and then they scored in the 95th minute to make it 3-0.

    So I laughed at him.

I heard a spanish journalist who said before the beginning of the tournmament that the drawing was the worst ever for spain: they were gonna have 3 very easy games before having to play a really tough one against one of the "group of death" teams...

Maybe that loss is not such a bad thing for them, they will have to play the next 2 games with a lot more pressure. Honduras won't be a problem but the game vs Chile should be entertaining.

Uruguay will annoy other teams in this world cup, good def and one top striker, sometimes you don't need more in football to win games.

Tonight France-Mexico, with Mexico being more offensive than Uruguay I hope "Les Bleus" will show some nice football. But because of the victory of Uruguay, 1-0 with a penalty at 88th would please me too. Watch out for M.Valbuena if he gets on the field, this guy's a dwarf but he's got atomic legs.

PS: I love football and I love this thread: finally, I can make some posts on VFDC about something I don't suck at. [IMG]

End of World Cup for France. Congrats to Mexico, they diserved it. I know it's not mathematically done but with what France has showed I don't want us to qualify...

Our pathetic perf shows clearly that 2006 final was only thanks to ZZ. Every team has a bad time after a top player retirement, but we had some good players and we should have done better.
When the ingredients are good and the final dish smells like shit is just because of the chief. I hope we'll get better with Laurent Blanc as manager.

I hope Mexico will go far in this WC, it feels that they were enjoying playing together tonight and that's what football should be.

Today's games were a bit of a surprise....everyone here expected that Greece was gonna loose to Nigeria after their performance against Korea...and Nigeria fighting off Argentina the way they did (with their super goalkeeper).
France...*sigh* I actually lost 20 euros on lol.

I'm hopeing Italy takes it again (if Canavaro gets his shit together)...catenaccio style ftw!

....second favorite is Argentina cause of Messi, but I seriously have mixed feelings about the team and coach. It's FILLED with soccer Divas and the only reason Diego would in any way fit as a coach would be because he is the only one that can tell them off, and they might listen....cause obviously whatever they are trying to do on the soccer field, he has already done decades ago.

Mon dieu! The equipe tricolore performed really bad...I dont understand the decisions made by ultra noob Domenech at all.Ribery is not a playmaker. He never had good performances playin in the centre when he played 4 Munich.Where was Henry?Even if he is out of shape he could have helped the team.

Dont worry french dudes. You get Laurent Blanc now.He is a good guy.Vive la France

I heard a quote from ZZ, don't remember the exact words, but he blasted Domenech as a coach. It's about time he left because les bleus have a talented squad but their sum total is significantly less than the sum of it's parts. Maybe this is karma for Henry's hand ball against Ireland? [IMG]

Agree that Ribery is overrated too! He has his moments but he's too hit-and-miss for my liking.

Greece got a lucky break with that "this is SPARTA" moment leading to the red card for Nigeria. Prior to that I was sure Nigeria had the game in the bag, and even then they had a chance to take the lead, missing an open goal! Greece's lucky day for sure.

Argentina, as expected, simply outclassed the South Koreans. Mexico and Chile have been really exciting to watch for me, and I hope they go far!

I'm happy for Mexico as I have them in the sweepstakes.

As for France, they deserved to go out. They've been attrocious so far, and they just can't play as a team.

Well, 1-0, we won our second match. Yay Holland.

Wasn't quite as boring as the last one but they're trying really hard not to play exciting games.

And the guy who commentates the tv-games in Holland needs to die. The dude is infuriatingly depressing. Everything we do right is instantly put to bed as the opposing team helping us a little and everything the opponents do right is scratched up to gross incompetence on our part. To hell with you! Their goalie didn't help us, he did his best trying to stop a cannonball and barely failed at it.

Now Afelay's three failures at the Japanese goal, that was somehing to get riled up about, but of course he has no issue with that. Unbe-friggin-lievable.

We were thinking of getting every Dutchmen that watches soccer to put down 1€ so we can buy this jack-off out and get another commentator. I'm pretty sure the rest of the nation would agree.

Next match we're turning on the radio.

Kaka's sending off was completely stupid, although I guess it could be classed as karma after Rivaldo's actions against Turkey in 2002.
