I really like Tekkens sense of style and humour, the characters probably have more personality imo.....

I'm putting the hours in with Feng and i'm starting to get fluent, but I don't like that there is so many long and fluid animation sequences which forces you to have experience of them to know where theinterrupt points are to be effective, especially given the number of characters.....

Admittedly at the end of the road this point becomes null, just that the nature of VF being single attacks allows you to be able to apply fundamental principles and compete.....

But like the guy on the last page said, kind of forced to play DR for human opponents, and the more I learn, like any technical skill I guess, the more I appreciate the skill of the best.....

You're right, I think Julia was the elbow spam. The problem is that it does seem to exist for most characters. There's some dude that looks like jacky that one guy uses, who does uppercut > punch, punch > punch, punch > punch, punch > punch, punch...

We've got one guy who like to play... Marduk (??? I'm bad with tekken names), and his strategy is low kick > tackle > low kick > tackle > tackle > low kick > low kick > tackle...

I won't claim that anyone up where I live is particularly good at either Tekken or VF. But, with VF, the guys who spam lose to the players who learned more varied styles. In Tekken, the guys who spam beat the players with more varied styles. That seems to tell me something.

I've always liked Tekken - I played 2,3,4,5 and DR. I wouldn't argue that they're better games than VF (I don't think they are), but I've always had better luck finding people to play Tekken, and people seem more willing to pick it up for a quick bash if they're around at your house, or having a few beers after work. VF seems intimidating, somehow, in a way that Tekken doesn't. I guess a lot of people got a taste of it on the PS1, so it's familiar, whereas VF wasn't that popular around here.

To be honest, it's the only other fighting game I really like - I've gone off Soul Calibur, never liked DoA, and never really clicked with 2D fighters beyond SFII.

    You are right grasshopper!

From the competitors point of view:

Here's what I have found to be true. If you take poor players at VF, Tekken and DOA
The poor players have the most fun with Tekken!

If you take masters (true masters) of VF, Tekken and DOA then it doesn't matter. A true master will recognize and respect true skill in any of those games.

    From Spectators point of view

Poor players on VF, Tekken and DOA it will suck to spectators no matter which game a bunch of poor players play.

When masters compete on VF, Tekken or DOA it is enjoyable to watch to matter which game it is.

But if we're talking about so-so players Then without question. VF is the most
rewarding to compete with, enjoyable to watch.

    @Master Po-Thanks! ^_^

The bolded is one reason why Tekken is more popular, the cool, quirky and dynamic character variety that the game offers...As well as the in-depth storyline in the game...

Actually, there's another I forgot and I never really realized the importance of it until recently...One time I had my PS3 hooked up at a friend's place and had VF 5 playing...and after letting people play a few matches, people were growing beyond bored with the game...Once I stopped it and started up T5: DR, people were getting hyped and everything, all I saw were many beaming faces like excited children...

Back then, I was a little dumbfounded, I knew VF was the better overall fighter to me...but I couldn't understand why everyone was enjoying Tekken more than VF...A girl there watching gave me the answer that day, she told me something very obvious, but it was also still very important...She said that in Tekken, everything just felt more "gritty" and during the fighting you could feel every blow that the fighters delivered...This apparently makes everything in the game more intense, and intense, hard-hitting, cool juggling gameplay=fun for some, so that's another reason why Tekken is more enjoyable than VF...At least according to the thoughts of the casual fighting game fans for the most part...

IMO Tekken and VF are both like Yin and Yang, two sides of the same coin and both mostly lacking something the other has...

With Tekken, it has the: "gritty" street-like combat, hard-hitting moves, supeior ground game, dynamic characters and in-depth storyline

While VF has the more in-depth combat style, fluid movement/evasion options, superior defensive system(Especially with VF 5: R's addition of Side Block) and Gravity/Character weight coming into play...Also more diverse customizations!(lol)

Instead of the constant competition and one-upping each company(Namco and Sega) try to pull on one another, I feel that a marriage between these two games(that would combine their strengths)could create the one fighting game to rule them all...

Alright, enough of the Lord Of The Rings references...Still, think of it, each has something the other needs but they are both too stubborn to admit it...

I have seen those kind of reactions before. If I could draw another analogy here.
VF is the jazz of fighters. If you know anyting about Jazz then you know that it
is most enjoyable to insiders. Sure there are jazz listeners out there, but the real
jazz crowd are the players. The better jazz player you are the more you enjoy another good jazz player.

Gritty, is not a word that I would use to describe Tekken tough. Play Def Jam Fight For New York, Now that's gritty, or Urban Reign that's a little less gritty, but far more gritty than tekken.

Tekken's little contact explosions, and the sounds of pain the characters make are more entertaining to causal spectators. I guess they might equate those to gritty when compared to VF.

But when you watch masters competite in either VF or Tekken its rewarding.

Look at the possibilities in the move lists of both VF and Tekken, In both games
there are thousands (actually more than that but don't want to discuss math here) of possible combinations of moves for any character.

But the music, the types of environments in Tekken will be more attractive to casual players and spectators. If you've ever watched Fight Night bouts, the rings are pretty realistic. If you're not into boxing after watching a few rounds its going to seem pretty boring. Compare this to celebrity boxing with all the crazy !@#$ going on and the casual spectator and player will probably find it more enjoyable.

For some people games have to be easy and outrageous to be fun
For some people games have to require true skill to be fun

There are typically more people who like easy, and outrageous
than there are that like skill based games (typically).

I guess the real question is if you had a virtual fighter master, a tekken master,
through in a DOA master, and Mortal Kombat Master into a universal fighting system (with hit physics like those in Fight Night)

Now that would be something to see

Great points Master Po, I really like the analogies you drew out, especially the jazz one! ^_^

Also, it is true that high-level play in either Tekken or VF can really be a sight to behold. Top player fights can really show you the potential of a game...

As you said, some people do like easy, pick up and play games and those are fun to them...Which is exactly why Nintendo Wii is a smash hit nowadays and Super Smash Bros. is becoming one of the most popular fighting game series of all time...

On the other hand, games like Virtua Fighter are an acquired taste, like jazz as you said....Games like VF are fun to us here...

In the end it really is all just preferences...Just play whatever you have fun with. ^_^

VF combined with Tekken, DOA and MK + Fight Night hit physics = Best fighting game ever...One can only dream though...

There is something else that I just noticed:

There is more bass in the sound of the attacks in Tekken than there is in VF.
The ground stomping sounds about the same. But the actual hits that make contact in Tekken have more bass. So here's the experiment:

If you listen to a VF fight with your eyes closed: And listen to a Tekken fight the same way. Its going to sound like there is more action in the Tekken fight.

Its funny., If you watch the kunfu flicks from the 80's the sound effects of contact or block have a lot of bass, that went away by the 90's.

Check it out,,, you'll see what I mean.

Haha... good observation. Though, try listening to akira v. akira with the sound too high. That particular match can get deafening with that collision sound akira has on all his moves.

(I also have a friend who plays Jacky... hates using dojo, because Jacky says "Yeahhhhhh!" both when he starts up a throw, and when he escapes a throw, so practicing throw escapes in dojo results in the sound: "yeah, yeahhhhhh!" over, and over and over, lol)

    Exactly,.,

But I think when Akira and everybody else in the game once they make contact
it sound more like a pimp slap. Tekken just has that old school 1980's kungu flick sound ... LMAO

I dunno. I still think VF's heavy freaking thump impact noise is one of the most brutal in the game. If you don't know what I'm talking about, its the sound Jeffry's knee makes off a successful catch blow off of Threat Stance, or the one Vanessa's punches do in her low throw where she busts you in the stomach like four times in a row. I cringe every time that happens.

Funny. That sorta happened. Dream Factory's Seiichi Ishii served as VF1's main designer and Tekken 1's director and then went on make Tobal and Ehrgeiz. To this day Tobal 2, IMHO, is one of the best 3D fighters ever made.

Anyway, I have more of a preference for VF nowadays, but I respect both games in what makes them different and standout. Both have the excitement and that "it" factor that makes great fighters. Tekken, to me, has more of an offensive focus (which VF has been incorporating more as of late) with landing high damage through combos and what not. I still enjoy Tekken and I'm eager to see 6 now. I can agree with the whole "hard-hitting" draw of Tekken. Granted the series has had balance issues in the past, but Tekken's dev. team has been working on it to get it better unlike someone else at Namco *coughProjectSoulcough*

I have never understood Tekken, to be honest. If there is anyone who would care to explain the strengths of the gameplay in relation to VF I'd be curious to hear.

I feel that in some ways the reasons I prefer the gameplay of Evo to VF5 are b/c VF5 is more like Tekken, but in saying that I am relying on my own fuzzy perception of what I think Tekken plays like. That said, even with my gripes about 5 (and online is awesome and super addictive) all he VFs have been awesome. Haven't there been some Tekkens that even the Tekken fans hated? And what's with the decline in Soul Calibur gameplay from sequel to sequel?

Well, Most people I've talked to can't stand T4. Most of the reasons I can understand though. I didn't mind it too much, but then again, it was good to see Tekken back to it's old self in T5. VF sorta went through a similar transition with VF3. Keep in mind though, that both T4 and VF3 made significant contributions to their later iterations (Walls, for example).

It's because Soul Calibur has become all flash with character licenses and no beta testing. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I played Lei in Tekken 3. Had to add Anna for Tekken Tag.

They were bottom tier in Tekken 5. Switched to Beak & Bruce.

<s>They</s> Bruce was bottom tier in Tekken DR. Swiched to VF5.

My first favorite in tekken was Jun Kasama in Tekken 2. I was a masher back then. The next person I played alot was Julia Chan I still like using her. Now that T5 has Asuka she quickly became my favorite because she plays similar to Jun Kasama my first favorite Tekken character ever. I am afraid to play online even though i have T5 DR on PS3 and since I am casual Tekken player, I feel I will be treated like a noob by the experienced crazies playing the game like it was a religion, even though I am not new to game and I heard that the game online is very bad as well. I tried to start play a few online matches but I couldn't find any matches against people at my beginner level unfortunately

The funny thing is that there is the same relation between Virtua Fighter> Tekken than in Tekken> Soul Calibur.
When I brought my PS2 in my holiday package with friends last summer, they spend countless time on SC3 and when I tried to get them to play to Tekken 5 or Capcom VS Snk 2 they found the games too complex, not fun and not flashy. Imho VF4 would have been hopeless but I wasn't playing VF at the time :p
The ultimate flashy and friendly user game : Soul Calibuuuuuurrrr !

    its strength imo:

    -oki game
    -combo system
    -control scheme

    vf is better in:
    -movement/spacing
    -throw game
    -counter system

they are about the same in:
    -punishment
    -movelist complexity
